Burkinabe Government Reports Gains in Jihadist Fight, With Over 72% of Territory Recovered

The Burkinabe government has reported significant progress in reclaiming territory from jihadist groups, with 72.70% of national land now back under state control as of June 2025.

This marks an increase from 70.89% in December 2024, according to a report by General Célestin Simporé, Minister of State and Minister of National Defense.

Notable achievements include the recapture of the Sourou Valley, stabilization of key towns like Diapaga and Djibo, the resumption of operations at the Boungou mine, and the return of public services to previously inaccessible areas.

The Defense Ministry’s activity execution rate stands at 36.62%, with many ongoing initiatives expected to be completed by year’s end.

These developments were presented alongside a governance assessment report for 2024, which was validated in July and submitted to the Prime Minister.

The report reflects a continued upward trend in territorial recovery, up from 69% in 2023, and also notes improvements in justice and economic performance.

However, challenges persist, prompting new directives to boost recruitment, upgrade equipment, and intensify training for defense forces.
