Burkinabe Security Forces Hunt VDP Member Accused of Killing Girlfriend

Burkinabe security services have issued a search warrant for Grégoire Zongo, a Volunteer for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) in Nandiala, suspected of fatally shooting his 18-year-old girlfriend and seriously wounding her mother on August 18 in Boulkiemdé province.

Authorities say he allegedly used his assigned Kalashnikov rifle before fleeing. Zongo, born in 1999 in Nandiala, is described as about 1.65 meters tall, black in complexion, and is currently on the run.

Security officials are urging the public to share any information that could lead to his arrest.

The case has reignited attention on the VDP, a civilian auxiliary force created under former President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré to support the military against jihadist groups.

Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power, the force has expanded in size and benefits, with top military officials recently emphasizing their crucial role in national security.

Authorities, however, continue to stress the need for discipline and accountability among its members.
