Cameroon’s Biya Begins Eighth Term as Opposition Rejects Election Results

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya was sworn in on Thursday for another term in office, extending his more than four decades in power.

The inauguration took place before both houses of Parliament meeting in congress in Yaoundé, marking the start of a new mandate for the 92-year-old leader.

During the ceremony, President Biya pledged to “spare no effort to remain worthy of the trust” placed in him by the Cameroonian people, striking a tone of continuity as he prepares to lead the country once again.

According to results announced by the Constitutional Council on October 27, two weeks after the October 12 presidential election, Biya secured 53.66% of the vote.

His closest contender, Issa Tchiroma Bakary of the Front for the National Salvation of Cameroon (FSNC), received 31.19%. Bakary has rejected the outcome, alleging irregularities and reporting incidents of post-election violence targeting his supporters.

The competing claims underscore rising political tensions in Cameroon as the country confronts long-standing governance challenges and a polarized electoral landscape.
