Chadian President Mahamat Déby Begins First Official Visit to Algeria

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has departed N’Djamena for Algiers on his first official visit to Algeria since taking power in 2021, at the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The trip coincides with the 4th edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) in Algiers, themed “A Gateway to New Opportunities,” which highlights the role of both nations in advancing intra-African trade and fostering strategic partnerships across the continent.

Beyond economic ties, the visit carries diplomatic weight, coming after years of tension between N’Djamena and Algiers over the Moroccan Sahara issue, where Chad’s alignment with Morocco contrasts with Algeria’s support for the Polisario Front.

Déby’s visit is seen as a step toward easing relations while also reinforcing cooperation on security and counterterrorism in the Sahel, with both countries positioned as key players in regional stability.
