Chadian President Urges Unity and Anti-Corruption Efforts Amid Political Tensions

Chad’s President has called on citizens to strengthen national unity, combat corruption, and work towards building a prosperous and respected nation.

The appeal came in a televised address on August 11, 2025, marking the 65th anniversary of independence, a day after his main political rival and former transitional Prime Minister, Succès Masra, was sentenced to 20 years in prison over his alleged role in a massacre in the country’s south.

The President paid tribute to the pioneers of independence, highlighted progress made since the recent elections, and outlined the forthcoming National Development Plan “Chad Connection 2030,” with priorities including modernizing agriculture, achieving food self-sufficiency, expanding infrastructure, improving access to water, energy, and healthcare, and tackling climate change.

He emphasized the need to clean up public life through the involvement of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority, the Court of Auditors, and the judiciary, while underscoring the role of the Defense and Security Forces in safeguarding sovereignty amid regional instability.

On the diplomatic front, Chad reaffirmed its commitment to peace and African integration, referencing the April 19, 2025 peace accord between the Central African government and rebel groups signed in N’Djamena, and renewed calls for a ceasefire in Sudan, citing a cholera outbreak in a Sudanese refugee camp as a major concern.

He also urged young people and women to engage in civic life, reject harmful traditional practices, and uphold republican values.
