Chad’s President Calls for New Regional Security Pact to Tackle Terrorism in the Sahel

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has urged the creation of a new regional security framework to confront the growing terrorist threat in the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin.

Speaking in Rome during the Aqaba Process meeting on combating extremism, he highlighted the destabilizing impact of past interventions in countries such as Iraq, Libya, and Sudan, noting that Chad remains at the forefront of the fight against extremist groups including Al-Qaeda, Daesh, and Boko Haram.

President Déby proposed the establishment of a unified Sahel-Lake Chad joint force with adequate resources and international backing, calling for stronger financial and logistical support for nations like Chad that host refugees and bear the brunt of the conflict.

He emphasized that defeating terrorism also requires progress in governance, education, and development, referencing his “Chad Connexion 2030” plan to build a stable and inclusive future.

He announced that an international roundtable will be held in Abu Dhabi in November 2025 to mobilize resources linking security, development, and climate resilience.
