Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, chairing the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, has called on newly appointed regional judges to deliver impartial justice and help rebuild public confidence in West Africa’s institutions.
Faye made the appeal in Abuja, Nigeria, where he presided over the swearing-in of new judges of the ECOWAS Court of Justice during a working visit.
He said the court has a key role in upholding regional treaties and protecting the rights of citizens, as ECOWAS faces continuing political, security and economic challenges.
Faye also paid tribute to outgoing judges for their service and urged the new members of the court to carry out their responsibilities in a way that strengthens trust in regional institutions.
During his visit, Faye also met officials from the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Parliament and Commission, the bloc’s three main institutions, and pledged his support for their respective programmes.
The visit underscored Senegal’s role in leading ECOWAS as Faye serves as chair of the regional bloc’s Authority of Heads of State and Government.
