ECOWAS Mediator Calls for Stronger Cooperation with AES After Ouagadougou Talks

The mediator of the Economic Community of West African States to the Confederation of Sahel States has called for “exemplary” cooperation between the two regional blocs following talks with Burkina Faso’s leader in Ouagadougou.

Discussions focused on security and stability challenges affecting the region, as well as the need to maintain dialogue despite the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from ECOWAS in 2025.

The envoy stressed that geography naturally binds the two blocs together, making cooperation essential for regional peace and development.

Speaking after the meeting with Ibrahim Traoré, ECOWAS mediator Lansana Kouyaté emphasized the importance of preserving the free movement of people across both regional spaces.

He said the discussions were constructive and revealed a willingness to continue engagement between ECOWAS and the AES Confederation despite existing political tensions.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to sustain communication and regional cooperation in a rapidly evolving the subregional political landscape.
