Ghana’s Ministry of Education has pushed back against reports of a 25 per cent increase in academic fees at the University of Ghana, insisting that no such adjustment has been approved.
Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, said the Ministry does not support any increase in fees, regardless of whether it originates from university authorities or student representative bodies.
He stressed that changes to academic charges must be subject to broad consultation and should not place an undue burden on students.
According to Dr Apaak, particular consideration must be given to students who are still adjusting to their programmes at the university.
He emphasised that the Ministry has not granted approval for any upward review of fees and that existing charges should remain unchanged.
He further directed that any payments already made under the revised fee structure should be refunded until proper authorisation is obtained and regulatory requirements are met.
The Deputy Minister also asked the University of Ghana to provide documentation demonstrating full compliance with fee-related guidelines issued by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
In response, the University of Ghana’s management clarified that the reported increases for the 2025/2026 academic year are largely linked to charges introduced by student leadership groups, rather than fee increments formally approved by the university.
