The Togolese government says five people were killed and 26,603 others affected after torrential rains on June 28 and 29, 2026 caused widespread flooding across several parts of the country, including the Greater Lomé area.
According to a report presented to the Council of Ministers, the heavy rains damaged homes, roads and sanitation infrastructure, prompting authorities to activate the national disaster response mechanism under the coordination of the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC).
The government estimates that CFA 1.14 billion is needed to support relief efforts, including the provision of food assistance, hygiene and sanitation kits, and medical supplies for affected communities.
President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé praised emergency response teams for their rescue efforts, extended condolences to the families of the victims, and urged the public to remain vigilant against the increasing risks posed by extreme weather events.
