Former Guinean presidential guard Aboubacar Diakité, known as Toumba, died on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 4:35 a.m. at the military hospital of the Samory Touré camp in Conakry, two days after being rushed from prison following a medical emergency.
According to the National Directorate of Penitentiary Administration and Reintegration (DNAPR), his death resulted from acute generalized peritonitis, linked to a strangulated linea alba hernia, despite intensive medical care.
His condition had reportedly been deteriorating for weeks, with earlier medical examinations indicating severe abdominal complications.
Toumba had been serving a 10-year prison sentence handed down in July 2024 for crimes against humanity in connection with the September 28, 2009 Conakry stadium massacre.
His detention had recently been marked by tensions, including a February 2026 prison search that led to the discovery of prohibited items and his subsequent transfer to Coyah prison.
Authorities have announced that a detailed report on his death will be submitted to judicial bodies, as the passing of one of the central figures in Guinea’s recent history is likely to reignite debate around accountability and justice related to the 2009 events.
