French Navy Rescues 239 Migrants Off Senegalese Coast

French authorities have rescued 239 Senegalese and West African migrants from a distressed pirogue drifting off the coast of Saint-Louis, northern Senegal.

The operation, conducted on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, was led by the French Navy’s High Seas Patrol Vessel (PHM) CAYOR and took place within Senegalese territorial waters.

The boat, which had departed from the Gambian coast, was attempting an irregular migration journey across the Atlantic when it encountered trouble.

Following the rescue, the migrants were transported to the port of Dakar, where they were received by appropriate local services.

This incident underscores the persistent and perilous attempts by migrants to reach the Canary Islands, despite increased risks at sea.

Authorities continue to reinforce maritime surveillance to prevent such irregular departures and safeguard human lives along the migration routes.
