Gabon President Calls for Stronger Judicial Independence

Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has called for greater impartiality, integrity and independence within the judiciary as the country’s new judicial year begins.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026-2027 judicial year in Libreville, Oligui Nguema said judicial reform must go beyond upgrading court facilities and improving working conditions.

He stressed that justice must be administered according to the law, regardless of a person’s status or influence, as Gabon seeks to strengthen public confidence in the courts.

Three senior magistrates were also sworn into new positions. André Wora Alonda was appointed First President of the Court of Cassation, Jean-Gaspard Mintsa Ondo became Commissioner General for Law at the Council of State, while Pamphile Moussavou Ibouanga was appointed First President of the Court of Auditors.

Authorities also highlighted progress during the previous judicial year, including the opening of the Akanda Court and the completion of a new court complex in Libreville.
