Gambia Implements Tougher Measures to Tackle Illegal Logging

The Gambian Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources has announced the firm implementation of new measures to tackle illegal logging and the trade in unlawfully sourced forest products.

In a statement released today – 20th May 2025, the ministry revealed that the enforcement, grounded in the 2018 Forest Act, officially took effect on 19 April. These steps underscore the government’s renewed commitment to safeguarding the nation’s natural environment and forest ecosystems.

Minister Roney John Manjang, who signed the statement, warned that individuals found in possession of or trading in illegal timber face stiff penalties. These include the seizure of tools and equipment such as chainsaws and vehicles, alongside the prospect of legal action.

The authorities disclosed that since 10th April, they have already impounded 12 lorries carrying unauthorised timber.

The crackdown also extends to timber and related products originating from illegal logging activities beyond The Gambia’s borders.

The ministry called on citizens, business operators, and government officials to observe the regulations strictly or risk facing punitive measures.
