The Gambia government, through the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG), has announced the arrest of 22 people suspected of drug possession, trafficking and consumption during operations conducted across the country between June 1 and 7. According to the agency, the suspects include 18 Gambians, three Senegalese and one Guinean. The group is made up of 21 men and one woman, all of whom remain in custody pending ongoing investigations.
The arrests were carried out in several parts of the country, including the West Coast Region, Kanifing Municipality, Banjul, North Bank Region and Central River Region. During the operations, officers seized suspected cannabis, hashish, skunk, kush and ecstasy tablets. One of the major operations took place in Sukuta, where two suspects were arrested with 94 packets of skunk, while two Senegalese nationals were apprehended at the Barra ferry terminal on June 6 with kush and 89 ecstasy tablets allegedly concealed in an unregistered motorcycle. Authorities say investigations are continuing.
