Gambian Government Allocates 30 Million Dalasis for Human Rights Victims’ Reparations

The Gambian government has approved 30 million dalasis (about 416,000 USD) to support victims of human rights violations, channeling the funds through the newly established Victims Reparations Commission (VRC).

Justice Minister and Attorney General Dawda A.

Jallow announced the allocation during the National Assembly’s third ordinary session on September 10, 2025. Out of the total amount, 20 million dalasis (≈ 277,000 USD) is reserved for reparations, while 10 million dalasis (≈ 139,000 USD) will cover the Commission’s operations.

Already, 5.32 million dalasis has been disbursed to set up the institution, with 17.5 million dalasis released from the reparations fund.

Despite the release of funds, compensation payments have not yet started, as the Commission is finalising its internal policies, strategies, and eligibility criteria.

The Ministry of Justice described the move as a critical step in implementing recommendations from the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).

Authorities emphasized that the process will be carried out with transparency and integrity, highlighting its role in advancing peace and national unity.
