Gambia’s Barrow Fires Back at Darboe Over Election Defeat Prediction

Gambian President Adama Barrow has dismissed opposition leader Ousainu Darboe’s prediction that he would lose the December 2026 presidential election, even if he used funds from the Central Bank to finance his campaign.

Speaking during his ongoing nationwide Meet the People Tour in Taibatu, Upper River Region, Barrow pointed to his victories in the 2016 and 2021 elections as evidence that he could defeat his rivals without relying on central bank funds.

He recalled defeating former president Yahya Jammeh in 2016, arguing that Jammeh’s control of state institutions had not prevented his defeat. Barrow also said he won the 2021 election without taking money from the Central Bank.

The president expressed confidence in his prospects for December’s election, citing what he described as strong support in the North Bank and Upper River regions, including the Wuli areas.

Barrow also challenged Darboe’s appeal among voters, saying Gambians, particularly those in rural communities, would make their own political choices.

His remarks come as the two political figures trade arguments ahead of the presidential election, with both the campaign outlook and voter support likely to remain central to the contest.
