The Ghanaian government has commenced legal processes to extradite former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently believed to be abroad.
According to Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai, the extradition hinges on the principle of dual criminality, meaning the alleged offences he is being investigated for must also be considered crimes in the country where he is residing.
Ofori-Atta is facing mounting legal challenges, with both the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) declaring him wanted.
The two agencies have launched separate investigations into his financial dealings during his time in office.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has also been pursuing him for alleged financial misconduct after several failed attempts to bring him in for questioning.
Authorities have indicated that once extradited, he will be arrested, cautioned, formally charged, and possibly granted bail ahead of trial proceedings.
