Ghana Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Arms Trafficking Across Key Regions

Ghanaian security forces have made significant progress in tackling illegal arms trafficking, following a series of coordinated operations across multiple regions, including Central, Northern, Western, and Ashanti.

These interventions led to the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of dangerous weapons and related materials.

On 8 May 2025, a 25-year-old man, Yussif Mohammed, was arrested near the Asankare checkpoint in the Konongo Division, Southern Ashanti, after exhibiting suspicious behaviour. A search uncovered a bag containing 207 rounds of mixed ammunition (G3, CZ, AK-47, BB), military gear such as bulletproof vests and helmets, camouflage clothing, two ritual garments, and a substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

Earlier, on 1 May 2025, three suspects – Gaba Abdallah Alhassan, Alhassan – Abdallah, and Alhassan Abdul Kudus –  were arrested in the Northern Region town of Savelugu. Police recovered an AK-47, a submachine gun, a Smith & Wesson pistol, a shotgun, magazines, and a variety of ammunition during the intelligence-driven operation.

On 30 April 2025, three men were detained in Bowodie-Wassa Akropong in the Western Region while travelling on a Grand Bird bus. The suspects – Hakeem Imoro, Imoro Tahiru, and Nurideen Wahab – were found with a hidden submachine gun and twenty-one rounds of ammunition in Imoro’s luggage. He claimed his employer had asked him to safeguard the weapon. All three are expected to face legal action.

In another incident on 16 May 2025, two individuals, Yaw Adu and Samando Dokurugu (also known as “Shapichino”), were stopped at the Ahenkro truck station in the Northern Ashanti Region. The pair, who were riding a motorcycle, were found with a pump-action shotgun and three BB cartridges. Authorities suspect their involvement in local armed robberies.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Joseph Hammond Nyaaba praised the swift actions of security personnel and emphasised that these operations will continue to ensure public safety. He encouraged citizens to work closely with law enforcement to fight crime more effectively.
