Ghana Secures $30 Million Chinese Grant to Construct Modern Market in Aflao

The Government of Ghana has signed a $30 million financing agreement with the People’s Republic of China to construct a modern market in Aflao, located in the Volta Region.

The grant, approved under the directive of President John Mahama, fulfills a key campaign pledge from his 2024 election campaign and aims to enhance local commerce and development in the border town.

The signing ceremony, held at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saw the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, sign on behalf of China, while a senior government official represented Ghana.

This initiative builds on the longstanding commercial infrastructure cooperation between the two countries.

A similar $30 million grant from China was previously used to develop the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast during the Mills/Mahama administration.

The upcoming Aflao market is expected to stimulate economic activity between Ho and Lomé in neighboring Togo, serving as a key trading hub and improving the livelihoods of residents in this vital sub regional corridor.
