Ghana will formally apply to join BRICS as President John Dramani Mahama’s government seeks to expand the country’s economic and diplomatic ties with the Global South.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision during a visit by India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to Accra.
Ablakwa said Ghana has asked India, a BRICS member, to support its application. He said joining the group would help Ghana diversify its international partnerships and create new opportunities for trade, investment and South-South cooperation.
Ghana and India also agreed to deepen cooperation in areas including agriculture, science and technology, pharmaceuticals, railways, defence and digital development.
The two countries signed agreements covering agricultural cooperation, scientific research and biodiversity as part of efforts to strengthen their broader partnership.
