Ghana’s Government Inaugurates Shea Processing Hub to Drive Regional Growth

Ghana’s President John Mahama has inaugurated a new shea processing center in Mba in the Upper West Region, describing it as a key pillar of his government’s strategy to reshape Ghana’s development model.

Speaking during a weekend visit to the region, the President said the project reflects a deliberate shift toward regional-led development, ensuring that growth under the national reset agenda reaches all parts of the country.

He noted that by building on local resources, the shea hub is expected to stimulate the regional economy and reinforce the idea that national progress must be anchored in the regions rather than concentrated at the center.

President Mahama highlighted the strategic importance of the shea sector in northern Ghana, where it serves as both an economic lifeline and a symbol of cultural and environmental heritage. He acknowledged the long-standing role of women in sustaining households through shea production while remaining economically marginalized, stressing the need to reverse this trend.

The shea hub is designed as an integrated agro-industrial ecosystem featuring modern processing facilities, quality control laboratories, training centers, storage and logistics services, renewable energy solutions, and export support. At full capacity, the project is expected to empower more than 7,000 women, create jobs for thousands of young people, and strengthen value chains for shea and related products such as peanuts, soybeans, sorghum, dawadawa, cotton, and honey.
