Ghana’s Mahama to honour astronaut Christina Koch after historic Artemis II mission

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the government has formally conveyed, through diplomatic channels, plans for President John Dramani Mahama to honour astronaut Christina Hammock Koch at a mutually agreed time, following her participation in NASA’s Artemis II mission.

He described the mission as “scientifically groundbreaking and exceedingly inspiring,” noting that Koch’s achievement brings pride to Ghana due to her academic ties with the University of Ghana and her global impact in science and space exploration.

Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed mission under its programme to return humans to the Moon and prepare for Mars exploration, tested deep-space systems aboard the Orion spacecraft with a four-member international crew.

After a successful lunar flyby and return, Koch alongside her fellow astronauts completed a landmark mission that reinforces human spaceflight capabilities, with Ghana planning formal recognition of her contribution on behalf of the nation.
