Ghana’s Mahama Urges UK to Tackle Africa’s Debt Burden at G20

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has called on the United Kingdom to make Africa’s debt burden a priority when it assumes the G20 presidency in 2027.

Speaking on Friday, October 23, during a meeting with the cross-party UK Parliamentary Group in London, Mahama said high debt-servicing costs were limiting African governments’ ability to invest in essential services and economic development.

He cited spending on schools, hospitals, roads and job creation as areas affected by the financial pressure.

Mahama urged greater international cooperation to help African countries manage their debt, secure more affordable financing and reform the global financial system to better address the needs of developing economies.

His appeal comes as many African countries face pressure from debt repayments, leaving governments with fewer resources for public services and development priorities.
