Ghana’s President John Mahama has formally dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, following the findings of a special committee that recommended her removal on grounds of misbehavior.
Torkornoo, the country’s third female chief justice, had been suspended earlier this year after petitions triggered a probe into her conduct.
The proceedings, chaired by Judge Gabriel Pwamang, were held behind closed doors under Article 146, during which 13 witnesses were heard in the first case, alongside testimony from the Chief Justice and 12 defense witnesses.
The inquiry reviewed nearly 10,000 pages of documents before concluding that Torkornoo should be removed from office, a recommendation Mahama implemented immediately.
While the committee’s report on the first petition has been finalized, proceedings on the second petition have been adjourned at the request of both parties, with findings on the remaining cases expected later.
