Guinea-Bissau’s military authorities have barred former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló from returning to the country, saying security conditions are not sufficient to guarantee his safe return.
In a statement issued in Bissau on Wednesday, the military high command overseeing the restoration of security and public order said it had assessed the country’s political and security situation before reaching its decision.
The authorities said the measure was based solely on national security concerns, the protection of public order and efforts to prevent developments that could threaten the country’s stability.
The military also reiterated a ban on political demonstrations and public gatherings during the ongoing transition, warning that violations would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The statement urged citizens and the international community to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities as Guinea-Bissau navigates the political transition.
