Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya on Monday began a private family visit to Greece, marking what the presidency described as the first officially announced annual leave by a Guinean head of state as part of a transparency initiative.
The presidency said Doumbouya departed Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport after being seen off by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, senior government officials, military leaders and members of the diplomatic corps.
Authorities said the short break follows several years of leading the country and comes before the continuation of ongoing political and economic reforms.
Hours after the president’s departure, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, issued a statement reaffirming the military’s unwavering loyalty to President Doumbouya, state institutions and the Guinean people.
He said the armed forces remain fully committed to safeguarding national stability, territorial integrity and the constitutional transition, while urging citizens to ignore misinformation.
The statement comes as the military continues to play a central role in Guinea’s political landscape following the September 2021 coup that brought Doumbouya to power before his subsequent election during the country’s return to constitutional rule.
