The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the president-elect following the country’s general elections held on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
In an announcement on Monday, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, who also serves as the returning officer for the presidential election, confirmed that Mr. Mahama secured a decisive victory with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes. His closest competitor, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.
While results from nine constituencies, totaling over 947,000 votes, remain outstanding due to unresolved issues, Mensa assured that these would not alter the outcome. “Even if all the votes from the nine constituencies were added to the first runner-up’s tally, they would not surpass the votes secured by Mr. Mahama,” she stated.
The total valid votes cast amounted to 11,191,422, with rejected ballots numbering 239,109. The difference between Mr. Mahama’s and Dr. Bawumia’s votes stands at 1,671,093.
Mahama’s victory marks his return to the presidency, with his leadership promising a new direction for the country. Meanwhile, the EC confirmed that the results from the remaining nine constituencies would be added to the commission’s official records in due course.
This landslide victory solidifies Mahama’s mandate and underscores the significance of the NDC’s campaign in one of the most closely watched elections in Ghana’s recent history.
