A Kenyan Member of Parliament Charles Were, representing the Kasipul constituency in the west of the country, was shot and killed on Wednesday night in the capital, Nairobi.
According to local media, the attack occurred around 7:30 PM when two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle followed the lawmaker before one dismounted and shot him at close range.
Were was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. His driver reportedly survived the attack.
Were was a member of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, led by Raila Odinga, a veteran politician who lost the 2022 presidential election to William Ruto.
Although Odinga had initially disputed the election results, citing irregularities, he later reached a political agreement with Ruto aimed at addressing national challenges.
The motive for the killing remains unclear as authorities continue investigations.
