Macky Sall to Meet President Diomaye Faye Over UN Secretary-General Bid

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall will visit Dakar on July 17 for a meeting with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as part of his campaign to become the next United Nations Secretary-General.

Sall said the brief visit is linked to the international consultations he has been conducting with world leaders and key members of the UN Security Council ahead of the selection process.

He thanked President Faye, Senegalese religious and traditional leaders, and citizens for their support, adding that he will return later for meetings with his supporters.

The visit comes after a series of diplomatic engagements by the former president, including meetings with officials from China, Greece, France and the United States. Sall has discussed his candidacy, UN reforms and the future of multilateralism with several influential figures, including permanent representatives to the United Nations.

The selection process for the successor to António Guterres, whose term ends in December 2026, will require approval from the UN Security Council’s 15 members without opposition from any of its five permanent members.

Six candidates are currently in the race, including Macky Sall.
