Madagascar’s High Court Declares Presidency Vacant, Installs Military-Led Transition

Madagascar’s High Constitutional Court has declared the offices of President Andry Rajoelina and Senate President vacant, citing their inability to perform official duties.

The court appointed Colonel Michaël Randrianirina of Capsat as interim leader, tasked with organizing presidential elections within 30 to 60 days under judicial supervision.

The ruling follows a complaint by Deputy Speaker Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko over alleged constitutional violations and state dysfunction.

After parliament blocked Rajoelina’s bid to dissolve the Assembly, Colonel Randrianirina announced a Transitional National Defense Council to oversee presidential duties and a two-year roadmap toward constitutional order, a civilian government, and new elections.

Several state institutions, including the Senate and electoral commission, have been suspended during the transition.
