Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has called on African countries to establish a right of return for people of African descent, saying the policy would strengthen ties between the continent and its global diaspora while advancing Pan-African unity. Speaking on his vision for Africa’s future, Mahama revealed that Ghana is considering new legislation to provide clearer pathways to residency and citizenship for members of the global African community seeking to reconnect with the continent. He said the initiative would also form part of his agenda if he becomes Chairperson of the African Union, arguing that welcoming the diaspora would deepen their participation in Africa’s development.
President Mahama also urged Africa’s youth to embrace innovation, entrepreneurship and ethical leadership, describing them as the generation that will shape the continent’s next chapter. He said advances in technology, knowledge and innovation have created unprecedented opportunities for young Africans and the diaspora to transform their societies. Calling on governments to invest in quality education, equal opportunities, democratic governance and shared prosperity, Mahama stressed that creating these foundations would enable people of African descent not only to contribute to Africa’s future but to lead it.
