Mali and Algeria have taken steps to restore diplomatic relations with the return of their ambassadors and the reopening of airspace after more than a year of strained ties.
Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop met with Algerian Ambassador Kamal Retieb in Bamako as both countries pledged to revive cooperation.
The renewed engagement follows reciprocal decisions announced on July 10, ending key restrictions imposed during the diplomatic crisis that began in April 2025. However, no roadmap has been announced to resolve the issues that triggered the dispute.
Several major disagreements remain unresolved, including the presence of Malian opposition figure Imam Mahmoud Dicko in Algeria, the legal dispute over the downing of a Malian military drone near the border, and Mali’s accusations that Algeria supports armed groups operating in the north, claims Algiers denies.
The future of the 2015 Algiers Peace Agreement and security cooperation along the shared border also remain uncertain. While diplomatic channels have been restored, both governments have yet to announce agreements on intelligence sharing, border security or the pending case before the International Court of Justice.
