Mali has launched a new three-year programme aimed at reducing begging, protecting vulnerable children and addressing potential tensions in religious spaces.
Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga launched the implementation of the 2026-2028 National Strategy to Combat Begging in Bamako on September 24.
The programme focuses on child protection, support for families and Quranic teachers, inclusive education and social reintegration. Authorities say the approach will emphasize social support and prevention rather than punishment.
The government had previously estimated the programme would require more than 5 billion CFA francs, while also planning to identify and map areas where people involved in begging commonly gather. Officials did not announce the final funding allocated for the programme.
The launch also covered a government committee established to help prevent tensions in religious spaces, including those linked to sermons, media and social networks. Its work also includes measures related to places of worship and the prevention of violent extremism.
A separate civic mobilization initiative will promote activities involving communities, schools and regions across Mali. Authorities have not yet provided details on its funding, timeline or specific targets.
The three initiatives were presented at a ceremony attended by government officials, religious leaders, traditional authorities and civil society representatives.
