Mali, Morocco Deepen Water Cooperation Talks Amid Growing Demand for Sustainable Solutions

Mali and Morocco have renewed discussions on strengthening cooperation in the water sector following high-level talks held in Rabat on May 22, 2026.

The meeting brought together Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, and Mali’s Minister of Energy and Water, Tiémoko Traoré, alongside Malian ambassador Fafré Camara.

Discussions focused on technical expertise, professional training, meteorology and support for Mali’s water development priorities, as Bamako seeks to improve access to drinking water and modernize governance in the sector.

During the talks, Morocco presented its water management strategy developed to address drought and increasing water stress, including dam construction, desalination projects, wastewater recycling and mobile water treatment systems.

Mali expressed interest in benefiting from this experience as large disparities in water access persist, particularly in rural communities.

The meeting also explored training opportunities for Malian officials in Moroccan institutions and cooperation in meteorology and artificial cloud seeding.

The renewed dialogue comes months after the World Bank approved $100 million in funding for a water security project in Mali aimed at expanding drinking water infrastructure.

Moroccan officials indicated that a new bilateral cooperation agreement could soon be finalized to support Mali’s long-term water development strategy.
