Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso Officially Exit ECOWAS

The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) takes effect today, January 29, 2025.

However, ECOWAS has introduced measures to minimize disruptions for citizens and businesses despite the exit.
In a statement, ECOWAS directed authorities within and outside its member states to continue recognizing national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo for citizens of the three countries.

Additionally, goods and services from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will still be treated under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies.

The regional bloc has also established a framework to facilitate discussions on future engagement with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). These interim arrangements will remain in place until a final decision is made by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

In several cities in Burkina Faso and Niger, demonstrations took place on Tuesday, January 28, to celebrate the exit from ECOWAS.

Meanwhile, citizens of the three nations will retain the right to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment in ECOWAS countries until further notice. Additionally, ECOWAS officials from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will receive full support and cooperation in the course of their duties.
