The town of Tonka in Mali’s Timbuktu region was gripped by shock and grief on Friday following the public execution of Mariam Cissé, a young TikTok creator celebrated for her uplifting messages and followed by tens of thousands online.
According to reports, Cissé was abducted on Thursday by armed men who accused her of sharing intelligence on militant movements with the Malian army.
She was reportedly shot publicly the next day. Cissé, known for her energy and hopeful messages, had amassed more than 140,000 followers.
Her death ignited a wave of tributes and condemnation on social media, with users mourning “a courageous and radiant young woman” while decrying the act as a brutal attack on free expression.
The execution comes amid escalating insecurity in the Timbuktu region, marked by kidnappings and targeted attacks. Residents of Tonka expressed outrage and sorrow, emphasizing the loss of not just an influencer but a symbol of courage and hope.
