Malian Authorities Secure Bamako After Early Morning Insurgent Attack on Gendarmerie School

Mali’s authorities announced on Tuesday that Bamako is now under control following an insurgent attack on a gendarmerie training school in the southeastern district of Faladie.

Gunfire erupted across the capital before dawn as terrorists attempted to infiltrate the facility, prompting a swift response from security forces.

In an official statement, the government confirmed that mopping-up operations are ongoing in the area and urged residents to avoid the vicinity while awaiting further updates.

The attack took place near the main international airport, with gunshots reported around 05:30 GMT.

Local media indicated that gunfire was heard in the Banankabougoun neighborhood, with residents heading for morning prayers turning back due to the violence. Some witnesses claimed the gunfire originated from the direction of the airport, while others said it came from near the gendarmerie.

Mali has been battling an Islamist insurgency since 2012, which began in the country’s north and has since spread across the Sahel region.

The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions, as both militants and military forces have been accused of violence against civilians.
