At least 12 people have lost their lives and more than 5,000 have been affected by severe flooding in Mali, as torrential rains, lightning strikes, and strong winds batter the country.
The figures were confirmed in a report released Monday by the Interministerial Committee for Crisis and Disaster Management.
Since the beginning of the rainy season in June through to 31 July 2025, the authorities have recorded 21 incidents of flooding, three cases of lightning strikes, two of strong winds, and one landslide.
These weather events have led to 12 fatalities and left 30 people injured. In total, 657 households, representing 5,307 individuals, vhave been impacted.
In response, the Malian government is stepping up its disaster response and preparedness efforts. Measures include equipping all Civil Protection units with water depletion pumps and distributing food and non-food aid to 34 affected families in Kidal, following floods on 22 and 23 July.
Efforts are also underway to raise public awareness about disaster preparedness.
Authorities also aim to strengthen community-based early warning systems, expand the use of flood alert beacons, and mobilise volunteer brigades under the “Citizen Months” initiative to support residents during emergencies.
