Mali’s National Charter for Peace and Reconciliation Draft to be Submited to President Goïta

Mali’s draft National Charter for Peace and Reconciliation, the outcome of over six months of national and diaspora consultations, will be officially presented to President General Asimi Goïta today, July 22, at the Koulouba Palace.

Though slightly delayed from the original timeline, the document marks a shift away from the 2015 Algiers Agreement, which transitional authorities deem unfit for the country’s current realities.

The new Charter adopts an endogenous approach rooted in national institutions and local values, aligning with the principles of the 2023 Constitution.

Described as inclusive and sovereign, the Charter aims to strengthen national unity amid ongoing security challenges in Mali’s north and center.

Authorities view it as a foundation for rebuilding state structures and restoring cohesion.

A national communications strategy will soon be rolled out to support its public adoption.

The delay in submission was attributed to the need for broader consultation and refinement of the text.
