Malian Transitional President Assimi Goïta and several of his comrades have been promoted to the rank of general, following recommendations from the Inter-Malian Dialogue held in May 2024.
The Council of Ministers announced the promotions on Wednesday, marking a key step in efforts to strengthen the military hierarchy.
Colonel Assimi Goïta, who led the August 2020 coup and serves as the President of the Transition, was exceptionally promoted to the rank of Army General. Alongside him, four other key figures involved in the coup received promotions to the rank of Army Corps General:
Colonel Malick Diaw, President of the National Transitional Council (NTC) , Colonel Sadio Camara, Minister of Defense and Veterans, Colonel-Major Ismaël Wagué, Minister of National Reconciliation, Colonel Modibo Koné, Director General of the National Agency for State Security (ANSE)
Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, was elevated to the rank of Major General. Brigadier General Daoud Aly Mohammedine, Minister of Security, was also promoted to Major General.
These promotions were part of the dialogue’s recommendations, which emphasized the need to reinforce Mali’s military leadership to stabilize the country amid ongoing challenges.
The promotion of senior army officers is seen as crucial in fortifying the military’s role during the ongoing transition, which began after the 2020 ousting of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK).
