Mauritania Reaffirms Support for Mali Amid Regional Instability

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has urged citizens to show solidarity and understanding toward neighboring Mali.

The appeal comes as the Sahelien nation faces worsening conditions, including fuel shortages, attacks on transport convoys, and a strained economy following the breakdown of regional trade.

During his tour of the Hodh Ech Chargui region, President Ghazouani reflected on Mali’s worsening conflict, saying the situation called for empathy and careful judgment from Mauritania.

He said the conflict had direct repercussions on communities along the shared border and that Mauritania could not expect normal relations with a neighbor experiencing such turmoil.

The president appealed for compassion and restraint in dealing with the impact of Mali’s instability, describing Malians as “brothers” whose struggles should not diminish the historical and cultural bonds between the two nations.

He stressed that despite the pressures of insecurity and economic disruption, Mauritania must continue to assist Mali where possible and remain supportive of its efforts to restore peace.

Ghazouani cautioned against emotional or reactionary responses to the ongoing crisis, noting that while conflicts may come and go, neighboring countries must coexist.
