Niger and Algeria are advancing preparations for the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) as the two countries seek to deepen cooperation in oil and gas.
Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani met Algeria’s Minister of State for Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, in Niamey on September 22. Arkab delivered a message from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to stronger energy cooperation with Niger.
The talks focused on preparations for topographical surveys and technical studies in Niger needed to move the TSGP project forward.
The two sides also discussed Sonatrach’s oil exploration activities in Niger’s Kafra area, including possible expansion to other blocks, as well as support for Niger’s state-owned Sonidep in crude oil marketing and commercial negotiations.
The TSGP is planned to carry Nigerian gas through Niger and Algeria to European markets. The latest talks come as Niamey and Algiers seek to expand their energy partnership through major infrastructure, exploration and oil development projects.
