Niger-France Tensions Deepen Over Expulsions of Embassy Officials

Niger has accused France of ingratitude over the expulsion of two Nigerien embassy personnel in September, including an official who was seriously injured during a security mission conducted with French forces in 2014.

Justice Minister Alio Daouda said Abdoul-Razak Ibrahim Moussa Toro was evacuated to France for treatment after being wounded in Diffa, southeastern Niger. French authorities declared him persona non grata on 16 September 2026, extending the measure to his family, including his children.

Toro left France on 19 September after challenging the decision in court, according to the minister. France’s Foreign Ministry has not publicly commented on Niger’s allegations.

The dispute adds to tensions following Niger’s 2023 military coup, which led to the withdrawal of French troops and the closure of France’s embassy in Niamey.
