Niger Restricts Visa Issuance for European Nationals

Niger has introduced new measures for issuing entry visas to nationals of Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, only Niger’s embassies in Geneva, Ankara, and Moscow are now authorized to process visa requests from citizens of these countries.

For diplomatic and service passport holders, applications will be handled exclusively by the Nigerien embassy in Brussels.

Authorities explained that the move follows difficulties faced by Nigerien citizens in securing visas to Europe, as requests for on-site processing in Niamey have gone unanswered by European embassies.

The government cited the principle of reciprocity in enforcing the new rules, which come amid strained relations with several European nations since the July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
