Nigeria Confirms Top Military Chiefs Amid Push for Security Reforms

Nigeria’s Senate has confirmed new top military appointments, endorsing Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Wahidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Kelvin Aneke as Chief of Air Staff.

The confirmations followed a closed-door, two-hour session in which senators questioned the nominees on their plans to strengthen national security, modernize operations, and restore public trust in the armed forces.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier urged the Senate to review and confirm his selections, emphasizing the importance of a competent leadership team to advance his administration’s security agenda.

The appointments are expected to play a pivotal role in advancing military reforms and intelligence coordination amid ongoing security challenges across the country.
