The Nigerian government has announced plans to lodge a formal complaint with the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and pursue legal action against Daily Trust Newspapers.
This move comes in response to a report published by the newspaper concerning the Samoa agreement.
The contentious report, labeled as “fake and mischievous” by the government, claimed that Nigeria had signed an agreement endorsing the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals in exchange for $150 billion.
The government denies these allegations, asserting that no such agreement was made and condemning the report for spreading misinformation.
A government spokesperson said the publication not only misleads the public but also has the potential to incite unnecessary tension.
By filing a complaint with NPAN and seeking legal redress, the government aims to hold Daily Trust Newspapers accountable for what it deems to be irresponsible journalism.
