The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will investigate suspected AI-generated photographs and other alleged irregularities in its preliminary voter register ahead of the 2027 general election.
The controversy followed the circulation of social media screenshots purportedly showing questionable photographs linked to voter records in parts of Edo State, prompting questions about how the images entered the commission’s database.
Social media users also reported alleged duplicate records and missing names, with some claiming that their personal details appeared alongside different photographs or other incorrect information.
In a statement on Tuesday, INEC said it was examining the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses. The commission added that questionable records had been identified during the physical display of the preliminary register from October 9 to 15.
INEC clarified that the register published online on October 26 was the original preliminary version and did not reflect all ongoing data-cleanup activities. It stressed that the register was not final and that the public review process allowed errors to be identified and corrected.
The commission said it would complete verification and data-cleanup processes before certifying the final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
