Niger’s President, General Abdourahmane Tiani, arrived in Bamako on Tuesday for an official visit aimed at consolidating the political and strategic unity of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
He was received at Modibo Keïta-Sénou International Airport by Mali’s transitional leader and AES president, General Assimi Goïta.
The visit comes just three months ahead of the second ordinary summit of AES heads of state.
Formed in September 2023 by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso under the Liptako-Gourma Charter, the AES has since evolved into the Confederation of Sahel States, broadening cooperation across political, economic, and cultural spheres.
Initiatives include the creation of a confederal radio, anthem, and plans for a Confederal Bank for Investment and Development.
Tiani’s visit highlights the strengthening of ties between Bamako and Niamey as the three countries confront persistent jihadist threats, while regional diplomacy shifts with increased Russian influence and a more proactive role from African partners such as Morocco.
