President Tinubu Pledges Greater Tolerance for Criticism on Nigeria’s Democracy Day

On Nigeria’s Democracy Day, celebrated annually on June 12, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assured citizens of his administration’s commitment to upholding free speech.

He stated that constructive criticism- even when sharp or uncomfortable – is a necessary part of democracy and should not be silenced.

Addressing security agencies, the President instructed them to refrain from targeting individuals who express opposing views about his policies. He also called on lawmakers and political allies to promote open dialogue, respect for rights, and democratic values over authoritarian approaches.

His remarks come amid growing public concern over perceived infringements on freedom of expression as outlined in Nigeria’s Constitution.
